Why Redecorate Your Bedroom | Decorating Master Bedroom Ideas
Decorating your bedroom can be a lot of fun. After all, it gives you the chance to bring personality into your home and create the kind of space that you actually enjoy spending time in.
Often, the master bedroom is little more than a soft place to fall after a long day of parenting or work. It can become a catch-all for stashing things when company is coming, or storing things that don’t seem to have a home.
But now that you’re an empty-nester, you’ll want to take the time to recreate the space to be more of a sanctuary. After all, it’s time for you to enjoy finer things, and that means your environment.
However, if you are not an interior designer by trade, the process can also be rather stressful. Luckily, with these top tips – it doesn’t have to be! Use them as a bedroom makeover checklist and you’ll have everything covered.
1. Choose a Theme
As a child, your room was likely decorated based on a specific theme, such as your favorite princess or superhero character. While you might not want to add the latest Disney stars to your bedroom wall – choosing a specific theme or aesthetic can help make decorating that much easier.
You’ll find plenty of themes to choose from. Here is a short list of some of our favorites:
10 Popular Bedroom Themes
- Art Deco – metallic and mirrored finishes, opulent fabrics, glamorous lighting
- Bohemian – carefree style with rich colors, global textiles, eclectic accessories
- Coastal – a beachy vibe in light ocean and sand colors, neutrals, natural textures, coastal art
- Contemporary – minimalist decor, limited color palette, uncluttered, some soft accents
- Eclectic – a mix of a variety of styles and decor from different periods in time and place
- French Country – warm neutrals, elegant yet relaxed, just like Provence
- Industrial – utilitarian, exposed structural elements, brick and metal elements, masculine
- Modern – Crisp, clean lines, neutral colors, only basic functional pieces
- Shabby Chic – relaxed, light florals, feminine, and distressed furnishings
- Traditional – classic decor influenced by European styles, often luxury elements, rich colors, and symmetry
2. Pick a Color Scheme
While you can never have too much color in your room, choosing a color scheme is another great way to make your room look great.
Your feature color may go hand-in-hand with the theme you choose, and should be centered around the kind of atmosphere you are looking to create.
For example, if you are looking to make your home more relaxing, you might choose calm, peaceful colors and pastel shades. For a cheery, mood elevating space, opt for a soft yellow or green. Neutral tones make for a great space to decompress, and warm cozy colors – as you’d expect – make the space warm and cozy.
Once you have your main color picked, go ahead and pick a secondary color and an accent color.
The right colors can really have a big effect on your bedroom’s overall decor. It’s also a relatively inexpensive upgrade!
3. Think About Lighting
The right lighting can change the way in which your room looks for the better.
For example, allowing more natural light into a small room can make it seem much bigger than it actually is. If you’re concerned about privacy, sheer window treatments will lend a soft, filtered light into the space while limiting the view in.
Alternatively, you could bring a touch of sophistication into your room with a smart lightbulb. Not only do they come with a bunch of fun and ambient settings, but they are also a great way to make your home more energy-efficient.
For a room without much natural light, consider hanging a mirror to reflect what little light it does have.
If you have overhead lighting in the bedroom, consider installing a dimmer switch so you can adjust the brightness, or even replacing it with a sparkly chandelier if it suits your decor. (While you’re at it, make sure you have enough outlets in the bedroom and add more if necessary.)
Think about placing table or floor lamps for task lighting when you’re reading in bed or sitting at the vanity or desk. Lighting is also important in the closet.
Keep in mind the amount of light you want to allow into your bedroom while sleeping as well. Room darkening shades will help you get a good night’s sleep without being disturbed by any outside lighting. Some even provide extra insulation when the nights get cold.

4. Upcycle Furniture
One reason you may be reluctant to redecorate is the associated costs, especially when it comes to buying new furniture. Of course, there will be some items that you will want to buy brand-new, like a new mattress. After all, how do you put a price on a good night’s sleep?
You’ll also want to make sure your bedroom has some soft furniture, like a comfy chair or sofa. You may want to buy this item new, or you could reupholster or restore a piece you already own.
But when it comes to other furniture and accessories, stop by your local second-hand store where you might discover some great finds. There, you’ll likely be able to purchase high-quality furniture for a fraction of the price. Watch for estate and yard sales, too!
Furthemore, this gives you the perfect opportunity to put your creative skills to the test and try your hand at upcycling.
For example, a piece of vintage furniture painted white or off-white is perfect for a shabby chic decor. Or, you may find some 1950s accessories, boho lamps, or mirrored side-tables that compliment your bedroom’s style.
Besides the cost savings, it’s a great practice to repurpose items that might otherwise end up in the land-fill but still look amazing.
Among various options, white beds stand out for their versatility and timeless appeal. They can brighten a room, create a sense of spaciousness, and serve as a canvas for any color scheme or decor style.
Consider a wide collection of white beds and designs, from minimalist platform beds to ornate canopy styles. You’ll discover styles that fit every aesthetic and cater to different functional needs. That way, you’ll find a bed that perfectly suits your space and lifestyle.
5. Reinvent What’s Underfoot
Whether you have rugs, wood, or another material underfoot, your flooring is going to have a big impact on your bedroom’s decor.
If your rugs have some age to them, perhaps it’s time to pull them up and install new rugs. Rugs are great at insulating sound, but they’re also tough to keep clean, especially if you have pets. In that case, you could opt for a Berber rug over a deep pile rug.
You could also layer rugs.
If you’re blessed with hardwood floors, you could give them a good polish and add beautiful area rugs instead of wall-to-wall. Nowadays, you can buy washable area rugs to keep them looking their best.
Doing the floors over entirely? That would be a great opportunity to splurge on heated floors.
6. Pay Attention to Details
Remember that the smallest details often have the biggest impact. Sometimes, when it comes to decorating, you don’t need to make radical changes in order to have a big impact on the way in which your room looks and feels.
For instance, a patterned bedspread, luxury sheets, and new throws and cushions can turn an otherwise dull bedroom into an exciting and colorful haven.
Indulge in some quality bathrobes, slippers, fine soaps, bath products, and plush towels for your en suite bathroom, and your bedroom can compete with some of the best hotels.
Additionally, incorporating weighted blankets can have a soothing impact on both your body and mind, promoting a more restful and rejuvenating sleep experience. These subtle enhancements not only provide comfort but also infuse an essence of opulence and sophistication into your living space.
In fact, you might even decide to lounge at home rather than spend the weekend away!
7. Add Some Houseplants
If you’re looking to add a little something extra to your room, you can’t go wrong with houseplants.
Not only do they look great, but there are also actually many additional health benefits associated with looking after houseplants, including:
- Boosting your mood
- Reducing feelings of stress and anxiety
- Lessen fatigue
- Improve the air quality
Plus, they add a great “live” vibe and natural texture to your space and look great. So if there’s something missing in your decor but you can’t put your finger on it, try adding some houseplants.
