Mauritius has a luxury-honeymoon reputation that scares off budget travelers, and it shouldn’t. Step outside the resort compounds and there’s a cheaper island: local guesthouses, public beaches every bit as good, street food, and buses that reach most of the coast. The five-star version is real, but so is a Mauritius that costs a fraction of it.
